Team USA Athletes, TrueSport, and Experts Host Interactive Sessions
With social media, NIL deals, and soaring sport participation costs, the stress on student-athletes has never been higher.
Today, TrueSport is uniting mental and physical wellness experts to help local high school athletes tackle that stress through interactive sessions on how to develop and practice mental wellness strategies. Students and coaches from high schools around the Pikes Peak region will gather at the U.S Olympic and Paralympic Museum, where they will experience a safe space for exploring how to train their brains and bodies to become the healthiest, most well-rounded versions of themselves.
“Going into our third year of hosting athletes, coaches, and industry experts to explore mental wellness, it’s incredible to see the sustained interest in this kind of education and development,” said Dr. Jennifer Royer, Senior Director of TrueSport & Awareness at USADA. “We’re seeing our community truly dedicated to supporting athletes’ mental wellness and the overall culture of youth sport. Through this continued engagement, we have the ability to prepare our student-athletes to face challenges on and off the field with resilience and to give them the tools they need to succeed without sacrificing their mental and physical well-being.”
The event will kick off with a session from Art with Impact that will facilitate open dialogue and discussion amongst coaches and athletes about experienced mental wellness challenges and possible solutions. Participants will be encouraged to consider how sideline fan behavior, coach-parent relationships, and athlete-caregiver relationships impact their sport experience and mental wellness.
This session will be followed by workshops where participants will work with a registered dietitian and a certified mental performance consultant to explore practical ways athletes can prioritize mental wellness through their training and recovery habits.
“I’m so thrilled to be part of an event that’s bringing mental wellness tools to local student-athletes,” said Sarah Sutin, a certified mental performance consultant and TrueSport Cohort for Change Coach. “Engaging in creative outlets like painting, journaling, or playing music gives athletes a chance to step away and recharge after intense competition. These activities provide a way to process high-stress moments, helping athletes reconnect with themselves, lower their heart rate, and build resilience to keep performing at their best.”
The event will close with a session hosted by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) on the mind-body connection. During this session, student-athletes will learn the value of training the brain just as consistently as we do the body to create greater connection between the two, and to improve performance experiences and outcomes by tapping into appropriate physiological and psychological states of arousal.
Throughout the event, the following Olympians, Paralympians, and Team USA athletes will help facilitate the discussions and activities, each sharing their own experiences and insights along the way.

“As a Paralympian and now a coach, I use mental wellness tools daily, and I’m so excited to be a part of this community event to help young athletes do the same,” said Joe Delagrave, two-time Paralympic medalist in wheelchair rugby and current head coach for USA Wheelchair Rugby. “These sessions will focus on the person behind the athlete and the many ways to practice mental wellness, which supports well-being and drives results on and off the field.”
This event is being hosted prior to TrueSport’s annual mental wellness symposium. TrueSport Talks: Mental Wellness and Healthy Sport Families will be held at the Museum on November 13 in collaboration with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), Kansas City Royals, and NBC Sports Next, with support from the NSCA and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation. The event will be streamed virtually to the public and offer practical and evidence-based guidance on how to improve the youth sport experience for the whole family, with speakers ranging from Team USA athletes to experts specializing in mental health, sport, and athlete well-being.
