Helping Athletes Find Resilience in the Face of Adversity: A Free Webinar Hosted by TrueSport on How to Best Support Young Athletes During Community Trauma
In the wake of the devastating fires in Los Angeles and surrounding areas, many residents are struggling to cope with the emotional and psychological aftermath of such an unprecedented disaster. With widespread destruction to homes, business and communities, the focus is often on the adult response to such tragedies, yet the impact on children – especially young athletes – can be profound.
As communities in crisis often grapple with overwhelming feelings of loss and uncertainty, youth sports have proven to be an essential tool in helping children navigate the trauma. Sport participation offers opportunities to protect the routine, community, and sense of normalcy that often helps athletes deal with and heal from the emotional strain of living through a crisis. More than just physical activity, sports offer an opportunity for young athletes to connect with their peers, develop resilience, and regain a sense of hope and stability.
“Now more than ever, we must support our young athletes during these challenging times,” said Dr. Jennifer Royer, Senior Director of TrueSport and Awareness at the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. “When communities face overwhelming adversity, young people are especially vulnerable to the emotional and psychological toll. Sports can serve as a critical anchor, helping them process their emotions, manage anxiety, and rebuild their sense of strength. It’s crucial we provide them, and the adults who support them, with the tools they need to face and overcome hardships.”
To further explore how sports can support young athletes during times of community trauma, TrueSport is hosting an hour-long webinar, Helping Athletes Find Resilience in the Face of Adversity, on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 10 a.m. PST. This free event will feature TrueSport Experts Kevin Chapman, PhD and Deborah Gilboa, MD, who will discuss the vital role of sports in fostering resilience and share practical strategies for parents, coaches, and mentors to help young athletes during times of crisis, including the importance of protecting routines, tools to fight anxiety, and approaches to improve outlook. Attendees will also have the opportunity to share their concerns through a facilitated, restorative conversation.
