TrueSport, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) youth sport outreach education program, recently collaborated with the Los Angeles Bulls Soccer Club to ensure the club’s coaching staff has the skills they need to effectively mentor the whole athlete. This training, aligning with both organizations’ commitment to developing well-rounded athletes, focused on coaching philosophy and ethics.
“Continuing education for coaches is crucial, not just for refining their own skills but for shaping the future of young athletes,” says Audrey Shaw, TrueSport Outreach Education Lead. “TrueSport’s professional development programming equips coaches with the knowledge and tools they need to mentor and guide athletes effectively, which fosters an environment where young players can grow as both athletes and individuals. The impact of a well-trained coach goes beyond the field by instilling values like integrity, resilience, and teamwork that young athletes carry with them on and off the field of play.”
During the comprehensive 3-hour training session, coaches had the opportunity to reflect on their decisions, establish a personal coaching philosophy, and deepen their understanding of the challenges athletes face today. According to Aspen Institute Project Play and the American Academy of Pediatrics, less than one-third of coaches were trained in effective motivational techniques (amongst others) in 2022 and with 70% of today’s youth ages 13 and under leaving sport, it is more critical than ever for youth sport programs to seek out continuing education opportunities to develop better coaches, as well as improve the overall youth athlete experience.
The session also featured participation by Mele French, co-founder of the Los Angeles Bulls Soccer Club and a retired professional soccer player.
“With more than 25 years of experience spanning from AYSO to professional leagues, I couldn’t believe more in the impact coaches can have on athletes, said French. “As we prepare the next generation of athletes for success both on and off the field, it’s critical that we have coaches who can prioritize mental and physical wellbeing alongside technical growth. I’m so grateful that, with the help of TrueSport, we can develop coaches who will have such a profound effect on the Los Angeles community.”
Steve Olivarez, Director of Operations for the Los Angeles Bulls Soccer Club, also joined the training to grow his knowledge of wholistic coaching practices and how to implement those best practices across a program.
“Developing coaches is paramount for our club, but it’s equally important that we get the right training for our coaching staff, which exceeds 25 members,” said Olivarez. “With TrueSport’s coach education programming, our coaches experienced interactive and evidence-based curriculum that brought theories to life and really challenged them to consider all they can offer to the community.”
