Every summer, the U.S. Air Force Academy plays host to more than 3,000 young athletes from around the United States – and around the world. Fifteen different sports are featured: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.
A wide range of sports, but one common element: the TrueSport curriculum, focused on life skills and core values. Nick Kiger, Air Force Academy Associate Athletic Director of Events and Services, acknowledges the meaningful enrichment TrueSport brings to the program: “Having this partnership is valuable to us because it really helps us separate ourselves from the pack, and is aligned with our values and ethics. Offering the True Sport curriculum is an added benefit that others simply can’t offer and I know that our campers and parents see great value in attending a camp that offers the True Sport curriculum.”
USA Volleyball High Performance
NGB Partnership / Athlete Development
This program bridges the gap between the USA National Volleyball Teams and youth volleyball programs, acting as the “pipeline” for young players who aspire to reach the elite level of the sport. Each year it reaches more than 1,500 young athletes from around the nation; along with intensive training to build volleyball skills, it teaches the core TrueSport values of courage, respect, teamwork, integrity, and responsibility. Each youngster has the opportunity for powerful, personal interaction with a roster of TrueSport Athlete Ambassadors: world-class athletes, positive role models, and passionate TrueSport advocates.
“This program allows us to teach our future Olympians the lessons that will guide them on the path to their Olympic dreams,” says Denise Sheldon, USA Volleyball Indoor High Performance Manager. “But it also sets them up to be leaders in the real world. Using sport as a catalyst for teaching life lessons is what competing for Team USA is all about, and TrueSport facilitates the life training that our players receive, on and off-the-court.”
Colorado College Volleyball Camps
These world-class camps deliver a uniquely diverse experience to the 250 young athletes who attend each summer. In athletic terms, that means that each camper goes through a rotation designed to build a broad range of volleyball skills and techniques. In the classroom, the same system applies: campers break into teams to take part in lessons centered on TrueSport values and principles. Camp sessions are led by college volleyball head coach Rick Swan. With more than 25 years of experience, he can see the life-changing power of those lessons:
“TrueSport…is a special part of our camp program. Each day we have small groups of campers take part in lessons like goal setting, teamwork, respect, and accountability. Our past campers have really enjoyed this part of camp and look forward to learning about opportunities to make themselves better athletes off the court.”
Landsharks Running Club
Education / Sports Camps
More than 30,000 young athletes have experienced the positive impact of this program, which reaches kids through camps as well as year-round in-school activities. Parent volunteers join the coaches to teach lessons focusing on psychosocial health as well as physical well-being. A few of the key life skills taught: self-improvement, being an encouraging teammate and making new friends. The program’s principles are perfectly complemented by the TrueSport lessons delivered during every session.
“The partnership between Landsharks Running Club and TrueSport has been invaluable,” says Kathy Rex, executive director and co-founder of the club. “Since day one of Landsharks, we have taught our Positive Motivation Principles, which align exactly with the positive values and character traits of the TrueSport philosophy. By working together, TrueSport has provided us with tools and support, which enhances the teachings of our shared principles.”
